Public Health Technician
(Temporary)
Salary: Starting $3,068/month + Benefits

Purpose of the Position:
This position works within an established set of procedures and guidelines while performing routine or repetitive tasks. Under close supervision, this employee reports to the Director of Disease Control, Director of Public Health Partnerships, Manager of Administrative Services or Director of Environmental Health and works closely with Public Health Nurses, Public Health Specialists, Community Health Specialists and Environmental Health Specialists. The position may be assigned to assist with disease investigation or community education as needed and will be trained to perform in either category. On occasion, this employee will receive instructions and direction from the Chief Operating Officer or Health Officer.
Essential Job Functions:
A Public Health Technician may be assigned to perform work as follows:
- Review information received from medical providers and alert internal staff of a newly received medical issue that warrants the immediate attention of a nurse;
- Gather relevant information needed to prepare records, tracking of patient care, and enter all information into the appropriate data system;
- Assist in specimen management to include reading test results, communicating the results to colleagues, patients, or a medical provider;
- Research contact information of patient and others at potential risk of a communicable disease or other health concern and forward to internal staff;
- Screen patients to obtain medical and risk history;
- Assist in preparing materials for community events, education or informational presentations, i.e. Breast, Cervical and Colon Health and Needle Exchange;
- Present technical information while working within protocol to patients, community groups, and the general public specific to disease management and health prevention strategies;
- Respond to a variety of medical, environmental health and public health inquires via email, phone, and in-person contacts, research the appropriate response, identify internal and external resources and contact information, and work to deliver exceptional customer service to all that interact with the Health District;
- Communicate verbally and in writing with tact and professionalism;
- On occasion travel throughout the county to an information or education event using own transportation and auto insurance (travel may be in adverse weather conditions (snow);
- Assist in the delivering services to the community as directed during medical emergencies or a disease outbreak;
- Ability to organize activities, achieve performance objectives, and meet critical deadlines;
- Perform related duties of a comparable level and type as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- High school diploma or GED
- Two (2) years of experience working in a medical clinic, physician’s office, or a public records environment
- Knowledge of medical terminology, environmental health terminology, laboratory practices, collect and compile data, maintain administrative files
- Ability to work with a wide range of public and confidential documents while adhering to the regulations of the Public Records Act, HIPPA medical records, and other applicable laws and regulations
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Suites software including Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Establish and maintain effective, courteous and respectful interpersonal relationships with internal and external colleagues, partners, clients, and the general public, to include communicating with a difficult or disruptive customer;
- Ability to communicate effectively with a very diverse workforce and community;
- Ability to speak, read, write English is required; ability to speak Spanish is Highly Desired.
Working Conditions/Physical Conditions:
- Work in an office setting, sit at a desk for extended periods of time, and work with detailed information as viewed on a computer screen
- Must be able to obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license within 30 days of employment and possess auto insurance, or to be able to demonstrate the ability to travel throughout the county during adverse weather conditions
- Must be able to present technical information in writing and verbally in a clear and concise manner to a diverse population, some with limited English skills
- The successful candidate will be required to complete a thorough background investigation which includes the review of the individual’s criminal history
- Must be able to legally work in the United States as a citizen or possess appropriate immigration paperwork
- Must prove or obtain immunity to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella diseases within thirty days of employment
- Must be current with pertussis immunization within thirty (30) days of employment, be able to prove or obtain immunity to Hepatitis B disease within the first nine (9) months of employment
- Must provide documentation of the results of a tuberculosis test (i.e. tuberculin skin test or interferon gamma release assay) administered within the previous (90) ninety days or be tested prior to employment.
